Lago Trasimeno
Natural pearl amongst the calm waters and the medieval boroughs

Lake Trasimeno, the fourth largest lake in Italy, is one of Umbria's most precious natural treasures. Its landscape of serene waters surrounded by gentily rolling hills, dotted with olive groves, vineyards and lush woods, offers a setting of incomparable beauty. The ancient medieval villages along its shores, such as Castiglione del Lago, with its impressive Rocca del Leone, Passignano sul Trasimeno and Tuoro tell stories of centuries past through their architecture. These towns bear witness to the strategic importance of the area since antiquity, most notably as the site of the famous battle between Hannibal and the Roman army in 217 BC, a historic event that deeply influenced the cultural identity of the region.

The three islands that arise from the lake-Maggiore, Minore and Polvese- add to the charm of this lake environment. They offer visitors the chance to explore well-preserved natural settings and significant historical landmarks such as the Benedectine monastery on Isola Maggiore. Outdoor enthusiasts will find much to enjoy here: from walking or hiking along scenic nature trails around the lake, to water sports, or cycling along the bike path that follows much of the shoreline. The local culinary tradition, closely tied to the resources of the lake, features freshawater fish specialities such as royal carp and European perch, often paired with the region's excellent wines. It's a perferct expression of the area's rich natural, cultural and gastronomic heritage.
